HDMI son las siglas de High Definition Multimedia Interface (Interfaz multimedia de alta definición), una interfaz completa de audio y vídeo digital sin comprimir normalizada. El propósito del HDMI es proporcionar una comunicación entre los productos electrónicos de audio y vídeo como son aparatos de DVD, receptores de satélite, TDT, televsión, etc. El HDMI soporta la HD-TV (Tv en alta definición) y es compatible con ocho canales de audio digital, la información se puede transmitir bidireccionalmente.
Existen varios tipos de conectores, el tipo A es el más común y posee 19 patillas, luego tenemos el tipo B con 29 patillas, es más grande que el de tipo A.
